Whole Body Dentistry

'Whole Body Dentistry' in simple terms means the body is interlinked and the mouth, jaws and the muscles and nerves that control them are linked to all the other parts of the body.  Alter one part and the rest has to compensate.

It entails looking at the major muscle and nerve centres of the body and these are those that ensure good balance. From ancient times only the hunter that survived lived to eat, provide and to do it all again. The body is very much devoted to keeping good balance. Great resources are devoted to maintaining balance.  Where symmetry is lost, more resources are needed.  This strains the body and the cause needs to be corrected. A whole body dentist can't do it all, so we work collaboratively with other like-minded professionals.

It benefits anybody who has significant asymmetries. By significant we mean significant to that body.  What is a heavy load for one is not for another. Care must be taken to gauge the significance

If the asymmetries in your body lead to signs or symptoms, then these make you less healthy.  Eventually these can make you sick.  Chronic muscle tension, joint damage and emotional disruption can all add stress and reduce the ability to cope and function well. The more common examples are headaches and a stiff, sore shoulder, sore back, ringing sounds in the ears and surprisingly common is a supposed ‘ear infection’.  Often the inflammation is not in the ear but right next door in the jaw joint. The fibres that control some of the inner parts of the joint attach to the bones of the middle ear.

What do we do?

By looking at your personal issues, pain and muscle tenderness. Jaw joint, ear, as well as neck, shoulder and upper back pain are all commonly related to bite. As bites change, the jaw will adapt both in chewing pattern and in position. This means the head will alter position too. This affects your entire posture.
